Why is Resin a Superior Surface for Driveways & Patios?

Learn about resin, how it drains and responds to climate.

Why choose resin for your patio?

What is a resin bound patio?

If you ask anyone in the landscaping business, they will all likely say that resin is considered the best surface for both domestic driveways and patios. Why? Well, it looks fantastic and allows for bespoke designs that can feature contrasting colours and contours. Plus, it has all the permeable benefits of gravel, but without movement and the need to continually rake.

A resin-bound driveway is porous, meaning it allows water to pass through the surface. The resin binds together natural aggregates, in a way that creates small gaps between the particles. These tiny gaps allow water to flow through the surface and drain away into the sub surface, reducing the risk of flooding and water pooling.

The finished resin surface is seamless, thus making it a great choice for OAPs, wheelchair users or those unsteady on their feet.

Unlike tarmac, it will not fade over time with sunlight and is far less likely to suffer from the ingress of weeds that can sometimes occur within the joints of block paving.

There are 3 main benefits of resin, they are:

Superb Drainage

Fully SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) compliant, reducing the risk of flooding. Allows rainwater to drain naturally, preventing water buildup and erosion.

Anti-Slip

Anti-slip properties make it safer for walking and driving, even in wet conditions. Resin is a smooth, even surface with no loose stones or trip hazards, makes it wheelchair-friendly.

Super Low Maintenance

Easy to clean—just requires occasional sweeping and power washing. Resistant to weeds, moss, and oil spills. It has no loose stones like traditional gravel surfaces that need to be constantly raked.

Resin Bound Surfaces

We install Resin Bound surfaces that are fully compliant with UK Building Control Regulations.

A resin bound surface allows water to pass through it at a rate of approx 850litres per min, per sqm. This rate is substantially greater than rainfall (even with climate change) so your driveway will not puddle. It meets building regulations because it allows water to naturally drain into the soil beneath the drive, thus preventing water from running off driveways into roads and entering storm drains, because this contributes to flooding.

Tarmac and block paving, although somewhat porous, they often cannot cope with high volume of rainfall, therefore water ends up running into the road and entering storm drains. With more and more households requiring larger drives, a resin bound driveway is the surface that everyone should be aiming for.

Resin can be used on a variety of existing surfaces, including concrete, asphalt, and patio slabs. We will always need a solid surface to bind resin to, so we will need to survey the area to advise you accordingly.
